As good as I remember it being ten years ago. While fun in single player, the constant freezing of the screen as soon as a co op partner dies gets annoying, and can make death a frequent. Aside from that, it’s a fun game to enjoy with friends or siblings.

It is like a remaster of the one on the DS. The "land" texture, mainly the rolling ground has not dated well, I think at the time was fine but today it's ugly. The game still reuse the bad save system of the DS. The music is virtually the same.

The multiplayer is the best on the game, and is still a blast to play with other people.

This game was the twenty-eighth game in my longplay series on Twitch. I grew up playing this game one or two times with my brothers and on my own a few years later. This game is a lot of fun and honestly the New Super Mario Bros series will always hold a special place in my heart. :)

Stays true to the SMB formula, while adding more.

Good
- interesting use of motion controls for platforms. Trying to move left and right while tilting the wiimote to move the platform is challenging.
- new power ups. Bringing Yoshi back is cool, adds diversity to the gameplay
- the numbered platforms where you had to kill enemies to keep the platform afloat was neat.
- the spin koopa cart boss fight was kinda fun
- the wiimote controls feel great. The dpad and buttons are perfect for platforming.
- underwater level with luminescence jelly fish was creative.

Bad
- not being to save after each level was annoying. Replaying levels that I’ve already beaten just to return to the level that I lost is repetitive and not fun.

8/10, Really good and fun.

The "New" Super Mario Bros. series is a good time. Just good ol' 2D Mario. I'd argue that this is probably the best out of the 4 titles, but U definitely has more content. I think my biggest complaint with them, this one included, is that they just reuse the same music tracks over and over.

For this one specifically, the item sparsity is an issue. I went through the whole game and only managed to get 2 propeller cap powerups...in the entire game. (The usable items, not the ones found in levels.)

Still, a very good game.

A great version of Super Mario Bros, but adding multiplayer, changing drastically the experience of the Series.

I first played this game when I got my Nintendo Wii, probably near 2010, I had tried many times to finish it, but could never be bothered with the Ice World and the Water World, I don't know if skill issue, or actually bad level design, I just didn't find them fun, especially with how janky the Wii Remote controls are horrible, hand cramps after just little hours playing.

But well, the rest of the game, is fun, the levels are good, and with friends it actually is refreshing and the reason that made me play it for so long, the chaos is incredible!

Had a lot of fun, the game is hard af, and the Mario Series is always a joy to play.

7/10.

Pretty good New Super Mario game, I would say 2nd place to NSMB DS. Lots of frustrating levels in this one likely because they were designed with multiplayer in mind, as I played through in single player.

The addition of the ice flower, propeller cap, and penguin flower are all fun and create cool experiences. However, I do think the penguin cap could've replaced the ice flower. Removing the super mushroom was also a welcomed change because it was not fun to use.

My favorite world was world 8, lots of fun levels and solid music.

The world 9 levels are pretty fun for the most part, however levels 9-4 and 9-7 are some of the hardest levels ever designed in a Nintendo game. The levels are structured well, but the star coin placement is ridiculous.

Overall NSMB Wii is a welcome addition to the series which unfortunately was the start to a spiral into mediocrity.

On the whole, this is an unremarkable title in the Super Mario franchise, completely outshined by most of the other 2D titles and certainly all of the 3D ones, and left forgotten by time unless you have some kind of nostalgic attachment to it, or its manic 4-player multiplayer mode. I think this game can be left in the dust excepting Worlds 7 and 8. The two final worlds do not contain the best 2D levels in the series, but the levels are competent, creative, and short enough to be satisfying rather than punishing. They're difficult and introduce new concepts naturally- there are floating water bubbles you can swim in, and lava waves that move horizontally across the screen, and these gimmicks don't stunt your gameplay! You can adapt on the fly or learn a route and blast through the level, speedrun-style, and it's plenty of fun!

The boss fights in the back half are especially creative- at least with Junior, Kamek, and the big man himself! Junior gets some stellar fights, with clown car sumo and bomb trampoline being my favorites, and the last fight with Bowser is probably one of my favorite 2D platformer boss fights I've ever played! Getting that classic Super Mario Bros. slip under the Koopa King's jump only to be utterly blindsided by an intense and magical chase sequence underneath Bowser's Castle is something to be experienced by every Mario fan, and I think plenty of 2D platformers should take a look at this game's boss fights and be inspired, because they're a lot of fun! The Koopaling fights are disappointingly simple, but at least they're quick once you know what you're doing.

To sum up- yes, this is just more "New Soup"-flavored Mario Bros, but if you're willing to take the time, there are some gems of levels in here, especially by the end of it!

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘀: 𝗪𝗶𝗶 is one of the most enjoyable times i've ever had with a Mario game.

I played through the entire game on Multiplayer with my other half for this playthrough and my first playthrough all the way back in 2010 had me hooked in no time aswell, the levels are quite spacious to accomadate for Multiplayer but at times you can definately tell that some of the levels are better suited for single player but that just adds to the chaos and fun of the game.

Even for those who wish to play through the game seriously and attempt 100% will find themselves accidently and intentionally causing their friends to lose their lives one by one, the difficulty of the game aswell from my perspective is that the game is very easy to get into and learn.

I never used to be a fan of Mario games myself however one day i found out that my mother owned a Wii and Mario and played it pretty much everyday on their own, they beat the game multiple times over and i used to watch them clear levels for fun, my partner at the time didn't care much for the game but i still made time to spend with my mother being amazed at their talent at the game, which in turn made me want to play and get better at the game myself.

it's currently 01/10/2023 and i find myself going for full 100% completion in every Mario game so i'd say that this game was definately a great start for me and for anyone else that might be interested, this might just be your gateway into the series that you've been looking for, you can find all sorts of Mario games on many systems nowadays including your phone, I'd say just trying out one Mario game in your life will definately be worth it and incase you don't enjoy it as much as i have, taste is subjective and that's completely fine!

An epic follow-on from DS that remarkably managed to cement its place in Mario legend, despite being hot on the heels of Galaxy.

Compared to DS, there’s more depth to the courses and the addition of the freeze flower and propeller mushroom power ups add fun gameplay variety. 2D Mario also became true multiplayer for the first time, with the introduction of co-op party play.

DS had the more orthodox old school 2D Mario feel without the modern power ups, but Wii really moved the series into a new era. The buttery smooth platforming with the new Mario formula laid a foundation so solid that it doomed the U sequel to mediocrity, unable to improve enough on its predecessor.

I always hated Wii motion controls, so much prefer playing this emulated, with tilt bound to an analogue stick. Well worth a playthrough, especially if you like NSMB U.

For some reason, the platforming Mario games never really stuck with me in the same way that his other games from different genres did. When I think of a fun Mario adventure, my mind immediately rushes to something like Galaxy, with its incredible open-world exploration, or just any of the Mario Kart titles. I like innovation in my Mario games, or at least a little bit of flair to make me think that what I’m experiencing is brand new and fresh. I didn’t grow up with old school Mario, so my best memories of him are of his most recent and more extravagant 3D adventures. NSMBW is a great example of why the platforming titles are kind of forgettable to me.

This game’s biggest (and only) gimmick is the fact that it supports up to four players in its multiplayer mode. The team behind this game apparently bet all of their coins on this one innovation alone holding up the entire project, which is exactly why NSMBW feels extremely lackluster when you take this one change away. Perhaps this adventure works better as a multiplayer effort, but when you don’t have anyone to play with or just want to experience this thing alone, the game is just not that enjoyable. The levels feel extremely empty and this is particularly noticeable in the early Worlds. It’s like they made the stages bigger to acommodate four characters running and jumping around but actually forgot to add in any content to make all this space have any meaning.

Other areas of the game also suffered because of this multiplayer addition. Maybe it’s just me, but aside from being just plain forgettable, these levels are also extremely easy. The only time you’ll find yourself having to apply even a little bit of strategy is if you’re trying to collect every Star Coin, and even then it’s rarely because they’re challenging to acquire and mostly just because they’re hidden in locations you’d never think to look at. Maybe they wanted Mario’s first big platforming multiplayer experience to be a bit smoother rather than an excruciating task and I get that, but I still think there’s an element of fun that’s completely lost in games without a noticeable difficulty curve in them.

I love all the new power-ups they introduced in this game, but I hate that they’re so poorly administered. The Propeller Hat allows you to reach insane heights and do crazy maneuvers, but it’s never used in a way that makes its use challenging in any sense. In fact, more often than not, having a Propeller Hat is basically a free win ticket because you can just fly and hover through the entire emptiness of these levels without much trouble. The Penguin Suit fares a bit better because its helpfulness also requires a little bit of the player’s own expertise, but you can make the argument that better swimming controls makes water levels a cakewalk and completely ignoring ice physics makes ice stages obsolete. The Ice Flower is just there, honestly. It’s a less useful and way less adorable version of the Penguin Suit. Not even Yoshi managed to live up to the hype of his much anticipated comeback. In the grand scheme of things, the green dinosaur feels more like an afterthought, crammed into a game that didn’t really require his presence in the first place.

I like the minigames you can play for more items, even though I have terrible luck with the panels in the Toad Houses. Enemy Courses definitely helped me tons of times, though. Even though the game likes to distribute items left and right inside the courses, going into them already in big boy mode was quite handy. The boss battles are mostly forgettable (I can’t recall a single good one right now) but the final showdown against Bowser is pretty enjoyable.

All in all, this game is weird. I wanted to end my review with a list of my favorite levels, but there are very few ones that truly stuck with me. World 7-6 is one of them. I had a genuinely fun and challenging time beating this level and the cute flying turtles were exactly what I needed. There’s this one level with flying water bubbles that you swim through in the air that looked promising but I can’t recall much about it because it was probably super easy. There’s a rollercoaster level in World 8 that was a hassle to beat but still had an interesting one-time gimmick. World 9 was unfortunately a huge letdown. I was expecting either hard levels at last or at least some crazy level of creativity for the last hurrah of the adventure but I got more uninspired level design with a little bit of extra spice. It was more annoying due to having no checkpoints though. Good for them, I guess?

P.S.: I also didn't save any Toads during this playthrough because fuck rescue missions! Yahaa!

The game could have been tuned to be more balanced among worlds & levels, probably. And in very few (as most of the time, it's just lack of practice) levels, the hints/environmental prompts are not enough. Also, the usage of motion makes it a unique experience. Personally I hope there are more levels with Yoshi, and in New Super Mario Bros. Wii you can even ride Yoshi, which is riding (?) cloud as well.

From handheld to console, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the next installation in the 2D Mario series.

While I have nostalgia for this game, it wasn't enough to prevent me from seeing some of this game's flaws. The level design can be really basic and underwhelming. I couldn't stop comparing this to Super Mario World the entire time I played it and sometimes it just made me wish I was playing that instead. Don't get me wrong, this game doesn't have "bad" level design but it felt like it played it safe a little more than I would have liked it to. The first three worlds, especially World 2, are some of the worst offenders of this. However, World 4 is a marginal step up in quality and the game only becomes better from there.

The music, while not as great as some of Mario's earlier entries, is still enjoyable. It feels so comfy and laid back that it's hard to be upset with it. It does reuse a lot from the DS game which is a bit of a shame as the original stuff here is really good.

What this game knocks out of the park however is the power-ups. The Ice Flower feels like such a perfect extension of your moveset that it's easy to forget that this was its first non-handheld appearance. The Penguin Suit is remarkable for making water sections and ice-physics a non issue. It is by far one of the best power-ups in the series, right up there with the Tanooki Suit. The only one that didn't feel very useful was the returning Mini Mushroom which is still just as circumstantial as it was in the DS game.

The final Bowser confrontation was shockingly just as intense as I remember it and made up for the rather easy boss fights the game threw at me.

All in all, I do recommend this game. It doesn't do anything better than previous entries aside from the stellar power-ups but it's still a solid 2D Mario entry.
