Excellent game, but the Dreamcast controller is a farcry from ideal. Play this with a Dreamcast keyboard and mouse or on PC.

Quake III Arena is a multiplayer-focused version of Quake, so if you're into multiplayer games, give it a go. I'm not particularly into competitive multiplayer games myself, but enjoyed the game for a few hours, got fragged by all the people who've played for hundreds of hours, got disillusioned and quit!

Boring. Unreal Tournament has a lot more mechanics, content, and a longer "campaign" mode.

While it's clunky and primitive by modern standards, Quake 3 is a childhood relic from the ancient times of LAN parties.

hral som na steam decku! prvykrat, co som dohral Q3 single-player bolo na decku! level majstrov ma namotivoval. pripomenulo mi to, ako velmi mi chyba UT. chcem zabavny pohyb a kreativne zbrane. ktore nie su gun/rifle/sniper hitscan klasiky, co ja lubim, je rychly pohyb a pomale projektily. v UTcku ked niekto aj vystrelí presne na teba, ty stale mas sancu pohybom sa zachranit. to je to, co mi dnes chyba. a to je aj to, preco preferujem UT (specificky 2004) nad Q3.

Fluid gameplay that has so far never been reached again in a shooter. This game still holds up, only the graphics might turn off some people.

If you don't mind playing alone, I'd definitely recommend this. I felt kind of strange buying it, knowing that there was no singleplayer plotline like the previous two games, but I honestly prefer Quake III. Even having only played the singleplayer vs. bots, it's a high-octane, blisteringly fun arena shooter experience with dozens of maps and satisfying gunplay, not to mention movement techs like rocket jumping.

Completing the seven 'tiers' of the singleplayer and stopping for a lot of skirmishes on the side took me 15 hours, and I have a feeling I'll be coming back to it when I want to play an FPS. Quake III just feels right to play, and I can't get enough of the graphics and settings.

For a Dreamcast port it's not bad, it's even better than Quake 3 Revolution for the PS2.

Quake III Arena is a multiplayer focused game, most people have undoubtedly heard of it by now as it's one of the all time classics of the genre still existing and enduring to this day through Quake Live. I only played this game for it's single player component however, it has a campaign that consists of a set of skirmishes against A.I. bots taking place in the standard multiplayer maps.

Single player modes in multiplayer focused games have a real stigma attached to them in this day and age, these modes are typically tacked on, half baked excuses at adding perceived value to the product and by all accounts Quake III should be no different, but it is absolutely not. Quake III is the exception where it should be the rule.

The mode is structured into 7 tiers, each consisting of 1 to 4 maps, the tiers must be played sequentially however the maps in each tier can be tackled in any order. Each map simply faces you against 1 to 6 enemies and asks you to emerge victoriously, really simple stuff. So why did I enjoy this so much when I disliked it in any other game? mostly because Quake III treats this mode as a legitimate way to both challenge and teach the player. Over the course of the mode you will slowly be introduced to new weapons, new mechanics and be allowed to explore and learn the maps at your own pace. The bots range in difficulty as well, some are so powerful they are practically an aim bot and the onus is on you the player to study their behaviour and learn how to exploit their weaknesses, the game acts as a tutorial without holding your hand as a player and leads you to learn critical gameplay lessons on your own, and as a result you can trace almost every death and mistake back to something you did wrong. For any other game of this type it would be far to easy to toss in a bunch of over powered bots as an excuse for difficult gameplay and ask the player be nothing short of super human, whereas here the game asks the player to analyse the situation and learn.

And this is why I loved this game so much, even though in high player count maps it could become somewhat random and chaotic, but like in Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, each failure taught me something about why I failed, and each attempt closer was an exercise in refining my ability at the game, I could feel myself actively getting better and that was rewarded with victory. Quake III at its core is a simple game, look, move, shoot, but in that simplicity lies an entire dimension of depth which has allowed it to become one of the most beloved games of all time.

Would I recommend it? Definitely. Even if you don't think you like these kinds of games, and even if you end up not liking Quake III, I would still say give it a shot and experience what makes a game timeless. Then maybe watch some Quake tournament gameplay and have your mind blown at what a decade of refinement can lead to in terms of human ability.
